Mrs. Fauntleroy was half of a power couple of Petersburg (her husband passed away in 2010). She was a teacher at Peabody Middle School and Petersburg High School, where she later served as the principal. In 1992, she became the first black female Superintendent of Schools in Petersburg. In 1973, Petersburg’s City Council became majority African-American for the first time. Mrs. Fauntleroy’s husband, Hermanze Fauntleroy, became Petersburg’s (and Virginia’s) first black mayor that same year.
